gardening leave (British)
noun phrase

- an employee’s suspension from work on full pay for the duration of a notice period, typically to prevent them from having any further influence on the organization or from accessing confidential information

(Oxford Dictionaries)

---
GARDENING LEAVE, or garden leave, is when an employee who is leaving a job (having resigned or otherwise had his or her employment terminated) is instructed to stay away from work during the notice period, while still remaining on the payroll. This practice is often used to prevent employees from taking sensitive information when they leave their current employer, especially when they are leaving to join a competitor.

The term originated in the British Civil Service where employees had the right to request special leave for exceptional purposes. GARDENING LEAVE became a euphemism for "suspended" as an employee who was formally suspended pending an investigation into their conduct would often request to be out of the office on special leave instead. The term gained widespread public attention in 1986 when it was used in a BBC sitcom episode.

The term is a good example of British understatement and humour, because it refers to the fact that an employee in such situations cannot do much of anything, except perhaps take care of the garden.
